A Utah woman was injured one day before her wedding while helping her soon-to-be husband transport a mattress. The Utah Department of Transportation said that Alex and Lydia Kessinger were trying to move a king-size mattress to their new home and loaded it onto their truck.
Lydia laid on top of the mattress to keep it from flying away. However, as the couple was driving about 50 mph, the mattress lifted up and tossed Lydia out of the truck onto the roadway.
Luckily, she managed to avoid oncoming traffic and made it to the side of the road.
She suffered chipped teeth and road rash but was otherwise unharmed. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and was able to walk down the aisle at her wedding the next day.
Officials highlighted the story on June 6, which is National Secure Your Load Day, to remind drivers to ensure anything they are transporting is correctly secured to their vehicle.
"Items not properly secured can fall out and collide with other vehicles or pedestrians, causing serious injuries or fatalities," authorities stated. "These road hazards are often very difficult for drivers to avoid safely."
