With the introduction of the big block Camaro and 400 Firebird, Ford answered back in 1968 with the Ford Mustang 428 cubic inch Cobra jet. You could get it in a hardtop, convertible or fastback design. 335 horsepower and gobs of torque, at 3600 pounds, quarter mile times in factory stock were 13.56. Ford actually built for sale 50 superlight Cobra jet Mustangs that quarter mile et times were as low as11.62 and 119 Mph. That’s a racecar from the factory really. You could also get the428 in Fairlane, Torino and Cougar modes as well. An 8000 RPM Tac was also standard on the 4-speed Mustangs. It also came with a competition-style gas cap. Total sales were 3500 and gave Ford its performance reputation back against Chevy.
