1961 was not a good year for Dodge. They sold a 100,000 fewer cars in 61 than the previous year (around 250,000). Many think the blame fell on outdated designs. Hard to tell. They had the Dart models and they brought out the Lancer model, which was a downsized car. The performer for them was the Polara and you could get that model with the 383 with the “Sonoramic” long ram intake. This had 2 carburetors on either side of the engine feeding into the opposite side. It was a 30 inch long intake and today they are very rare and expensive. I’ve never seen one actually. They say it produced incredible down low torque. 325 horsepower and could be had with a trunk “Flight Sweep’ wheel cover that was very futuristic looking. Wire hubcaps and whitewalls plus the rear reverse looking tailfins, it was a odd looking car for sure. But I like them. And I love that engine.
