Capital One says a data breach on July 19thexposed information of about 100-million Americans and six-million Canadians. The company has disclosed that a hacker gained access to 140-thousand Social Security numbers, 80-thousand bank account numbers, and personal information from credit card applications over the last 14 years.
The FBI has arrested the person they say is responsible – and that’s software engineer Paige Thompson. According to court documents, Thompson worked for the cloud hosting company that Capital One was using for a time.
Meanwhile, Capital One says they have fixed the problem – and as part of that, say that no credit card account numbers or log-in credentials were compromised and over 99% of Social Security numbers were also kept safe. "I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected,” Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank says in a statement. “And I am committed to making it right.”
