World’s Largest Hogs Caught On Video

  • The Giant Forest Hog is the largest species of hog
  • It’s tough to study but someone set up cameras at a mud hole
  • The idea worked and a group of the hogs were filmed for future study

The Giant Forest Hog is, on average, 600 pounds and can be found in Uganda. They are also shy of humans so it’s been really tough to study them. That changed when National Geographic explorer Rafael Reyna-Hurtado decided to use camera traps. It worked and now we know how they travel, eat, prefer to spend their time.

It turns out they are pretty social and travel in groups that include up to four adult females, piglets, juveniles, a dominant male and maybe subordinate males. The beasts have noticeable cheekbones, black bristle-like hair, and sharp tusks. Rafael calls them the “uglies” of the forest. The hogs are the larges wild pig on earth, but the domesticated Yorkshire pig can grow to over one thousand pounds.

The footage taken of the Forest Hogs is going to be used for further study and hopefully to keep them safe from poachers. They are enormous, yet so little was known about them until now!
