C'mon Get Happy: 7 yo Skips Getting a Bike to Collect for Others

Oliver Harkness lives in our area. He is 7. He needs a new bike--as he has popped tires on his and his sisters' bikes. But, instead of asking for a bike for his birthday, he has decided to collect bikes for kids who do not have them. He says:

“I felt bad for other people that don’t have money to buy bikes and never had a bike in their whole entire life.”

Oliver turned seven on Dec. 6, but instead of asking for a new ride for himself, he asked his parents if they could start collecting bicycles for other kids who needed them. His mom, Catherine Harkness, put the request on Facebook, and they’ve been collecting ever since.

His goal? 100 bikes!!

The family will pass along the bikes to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office’s Brown Santa program. They’ll clean up and fix the ones they can to pass out this holiday season.

Sunday, Dec. 16, the family is hosting a donation party at Avery Ranch Park at 4 p.m. Bring by a gently used bike and the folks from Brown Santa will pick everything up.
