C'mon Get Happy: He's Skipping the MLB Draft for the Best Reason

As one of the nation's top high school baseball prospects, Michael Vasil could begin his professional career today at the Major League Baseball draft. Scouts anticipate him being picked in the first round and likely being offered a very nice signing bonus. But Vasil has other plans.

Most 18-year-olds would jump at the chance to start the road to the Majors, but the star pitcher from Boston has decided to withdraw his name from the draft and attend the University of Virginia instead.

Playing Major League Baseball is still his lifelong dream, but he's wise enough to know that nothing is guaranteed and that if he's going to need a plan B, a college education will be very helpful.

Vasil explained his decision saying, "A baseball career doesn't last forever, and as I think about my future I realize that I want to be known as more than just a good player." He continued, "Not only will [college] prepare me for a potential career in the MLB, but will also provide me with other excellent career opportunities."

Vasil will continue to pitch for UVA and when the time is right, he will enter the draft.
