She has inspired people worldwide by keeping her walk to school litter free and all the while, defying bullies who teased her for doing it.
When people do something good, you’d think they would be applauded. Unfortunately that’s not the case with Nadia Sparkes. Nadia is 12 years old and the jerks at her school started calling her "Trash Girl" and harassing her. She uses her bike basket to pick up trash in the 2 mile ride back and forth to school.
She has already collected more than two recycling bins’ worth of plastic. Nadia's mom told Nadia she could either stop collecting trash, or she could totally own the name 'Trash Girl'. Nadia chose to own it, so she and her family created a public Facebook page dubbed Team Trash Girl, where lots of people have posted messages of support for the teen.
The story caught the eye of a filmmaker who had made a short movie called, "Litterbugs". It is a story of a young girl doing something similar--the girl in the story collects trash and turns it into little toy bugs she calls 'litterbugs'. The movie-maker set up a private showing for Nadia and her friends at the Odeon theater to encourage her and thank her for cleaning up her community.
