When people in trouble arrived at a storm shelter in Rockport, Texas, they saw an efficient operation and were cared for by a small team of busy volunteers. Little did they know that the whole thing was being run by a screenwriter with no medical experience. As Hurricane Harvey battered the city, one of the first to arrive at the shelter was 29-year-old Zachary Dearing, who had just moved to the area three months ago. Zachary saw that there were no supplies and nobody was in charge, so he stepped up, got 15 volunteers – mostly under the age of 21 – and had the volunteers working 30-minute shifts. Together, they got people into the shelter, put together a collection of supplies and plugged leaks from the oncoming rain.
Zachary and his team took care of 126 people, six who had medical problems and four who needed oxygen. They all kept things going by themselves until law enforcement officials arrived to pitch in – and it was all made possible by an unlikely hero who took charge without any experience or anyone asking him to.
When police got there, they said to Zachary: "It looks like you have a system here--tell us where you want us."
