Why Are There No New Ideas--Everything is a Reboot! Ted Lasso is the FIX!

Why are there no new ideas--why does it seem that everything is a reboot or redo of so many movies that we have loved over the years. The thing that got me thinking about it is the announcement of Amazon Prime planning to do a new version of A League of Their Own. WHY? It is a great movie. Will they have poor Nick Offerman, who is taking the Tom Hanks role, try to do the "there's no crying in baseball" line? I hope not!

I went to the interwebs to see how many movies have been rebooted. There are entire franchises that have been redone multiple times--like Spider-man, Star Trek (so many iterations) Godzilla, Romeo and Juliet, King Kong, Little Women, The Mummy, A Star is Born, Oceans movies (8, 11, 12, 13), Tarzan, and Ghostbusters.

Some have been a hybrid of movies and television--like Bewitched, Stepford Wives, Chucky/Problem Child, TMNT, 21 Jump Street , the Incredible Hulk, Charlie's Angels, and Psycho/Bates Motel.

Some reboots of movies have been just awful, like the reboot of the Pink Panther (Peter Sellers RULES!), Poltergeist (why even do it?), Men In Black, the Great Gatsby, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street (again--why?), and Overboard--which was not that great to begin with!

(There should maybe be a discussion of the live-action versions of the Disney movies recently. I enjoyed some of Aladdin, some of Beauty and the Beast, but that is it. I did not watch Lion King, Cruella, or the Jungle Book. Did I miss any? Did you like them?)

There have been reboots that are just fantastic! I loved Jumanji with the Rock and Kevin Hart (no offense to Robin Williams); It was creepy to the nth degree, and the musical version of Hairspray was great fun. Have you seen Dredd? The redone version of the awful Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone? Dredd is SO MUCH BETTER!! It stars the handsome Karl Urban, whose face you never get to see. (He played Bones in one of the nine million versions of Star Trek--the one with Chris Pine). Mad Max: Fury Road was amazing! Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were incredible. It is visually stunning and a very exciting movie.

So--where are the new ideas? I am 100% into the super hero movies--I am not going to dog those, even though they are retread ideas in a way--coming from comic books. Christopher Nolan, who made Inception and Tenet has some amazing ideas. There seems to be an unending pool of ideas in the horror genre. Even rom-coms seem to have been hitting the same notes. Chris, my husband and I were talking about whether there had been any good comedies in the past year. Not really. We liked Palm Springs, with of all people, Andy Samberg.

The best thing I have seen of late is Ted Lasso. It is completely new. It is on Apple TV. Check it out--if you are looking for something that will make you happy and laugh--it is honestly worth the subscription price. Check it out!
