She's Out of My League vs. All Other Stupid Movies

Have you seen "She's Out of My League?" It's a surprisingly good movie! We watched it again last night. It stars Jay Baruchel as Kirk, a kind on nebbishy guy who works for the TSA. He wants to be a pilot but has not pulled the trigger to make that happen. He meets cute with Molly, the blonde bombshell played by Alice Eve. They end up as an unlikely couple. All his friends and family are telling him he is not good enough for her--and her friends and family are doing the same. Of course, the insecurity of Kirk torpedoes their relationship--til they work it out. I am not spoiling anything for you here--the movie plot is pretty formulaic. It is the writing and performances that are top-notch.

Baruchel's Kirk is 100% believable--and not just because he looks like he weighs 100 pounds soaking wet. If you don't know this--he was the voice of the main character in all three "How to Train Your Dragon" movies--and does neurotic insecurity quite well. His family is insane and awful to him--though it is all really funny. His buddies, played by TJ Miller, Nate Torrance, and Mike Vogel, are a mix of encouragement and undermining. Molly's best friend, (played by Krystin Ritter) also cannot believe the are together.

I tell you about this movie because there are so many colossally dumb rom-coms out there, and this one is clever, sweet, and very funny. If you are looking for something R-rated and funny to watch, Chris and I totally recommend "She's Out of My League." You won't be sorry...
