Why Is Plywood Sixty Bucks A Sheet

I paid $60.for a sheet of plywood last week. It is the common Zip wall. You've seen it on houses...it's green and has the vapor barrier made on to the OSB so you can skip the vapor barrier step with wrapping a house to help keep moisture out. $60 dollars...this same product was around $20. this time last year. They say that there is one chemical plant in Texas that makes 85% of the resins used in making plywood and that plant was damaged in February's ice storm. I can't imagine that manufactures hadn't prepared a back-up plan of some sort. There have been many supply chain problems with this storm and covid in general. We can and should do better. I can't understand why the states that produce these essential products don't demand a back-up source for this reason alone. Price gouging on all building materials right now reminds me of post hurricane generator price gouging....which is illegal. It almost makes you wonder who has stock in some of these companies.
