C'mon Get Happy: Florida Bar Takes Down $1 Bill Decor to Donate to Bahamas

There is an oyster bar in Siesta Key, Florida that has, since it opened, encouraged customers to staple a dollar or two onto the wall. The bar has been around for about 16 years, and every so often, the owners would take the dollars (which literally covered all the walls and the ceiling) and donate the money to a children's charity. After seeing the devastation in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian, the owners knew exactly where they wanted the money to go.

The tradition of the stapling of the dollars to the wall has been for laughs, and because there was a story that fishermen would come in, early in the day, before they went out fishing, and staple a dollar to the wall, so that when they got back, they would have money for a drink. Whether the origin story is true or not--the bar owners always thought it was a fun, good story, so they kept the tradition going!

So, for the past month, employees have carefully been removing the dollar bills from the bar's walls and ceilings. The owners decided they wanted to donate that money to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas. It has taken the month to take each of the dollars down--they are stapled with industrial strength staples--but the total turned out to be impressive.

After a month of carefully removing the dollar bills, the bar was able to donate about $14,000 to the Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Dorian.
