In Fresno, California, a foster family made an unusual decision when they chose to legally adopt an 18-year-old man.
Tex and Renee Petersen opened their home to their newly adopted son, Carson, three years ago. Carson was only supposed to stay with Tex and Renee for a few days, but Carson asked if he could stay. Tex and Renee agreed.
The Petersens had a soft spot in their hearts for Carson, because he’d been in the foster care system since he was a toddler. He bounced around from home to home for most of his life, but finally found his “forever home” with Tex and Renee.
A Fresno County Superior Court judge made the adoption official. As a legal member of the family, Carson will now receive all the benefits under the law that a biological child can receive from a parent, such as medical insurance.
And, of course, he will continue to get the emotional support from the Petersens as he works toward his dream of becoming a firefighter.
