Luke Combs Was Moved To Tears Writing 'Even Though I'm Leaving'

Luke Combs' previous chart-topping single, "Even Though I'm Leaving" details the pain a child feels after losing a parent. The country singer recently revealed that while writing the song alongside Wyatt Durrette and Ray Fulcher, his emotions got the best of him.

"Most of the time, when I see somebody gushing about a song that they wrote, I’m kind of like the roll my eyes guy," Combs explains. "When that’s going on, I’m like, 'Ok, are you really doing that or are we just playing it up?'"

"But I will tell you, that's probably the one instance where I was genuinely moved by something that I hadn’t even experienced," he says before continuing on to say how "lucky" he is to have both his parents still around. "I can't imagine having to sing that song when that time comes," he adds.

The country singer was so deeply moved by the song that he could hardly record it without getting choked up. "I was in tears singing the work tape of that song when we wrote it," he recalls. "And I'm totally NOT the guy that's...so emotional..."

Combs is unsure as to why he felt so emotional about the song considering he has yet to experience some of the feelings that come with losing a parent. "But something about that day was definitely really special," he says, adding, "It was just a really intense experience getting through that last verse."

"It was awesome, it was a good day, and it was one of the few times where I’ve really been moved by my own song, which I don’t want to be that guy that’s like, ‘Oh man, my song’s so good,’ you know? Cause I’m totally not that guy. But yeah, that was an emotional day, for sure.”

"Even Though I'm Leaving" was the second single released from Combs' sophomore album, What You See Is What You Get following his previous hit single, "Beer Never Broke My Heart." Combs current single, announced in January, is "Does To Me" featuring Eric Church.

In support of his latest album, Combs is out on the road for his 2020 "What You See Is What You Get Tour," which launched on February 7 in Columbia, MO. Fellow country singers, Ashley McBryde and Drew Parker are also out on the road as opening acts.
