On December 9, 2017, The Junior League of Austin will host the 31st annual Coats for Kids Distribution Day. Together with our longstanding partners —Jack Brown Cleaners, KVET, and KVUE — the JLA will provide more than 34,000 warm winter coats to Central Texas children in need.
As families arrive on Distribution Day, bilingual volunteers greet them and review documents for verification of economic need. The families are then escorted by a volunteer through racks of sorted coats. Children are able to select their desired size and style of coat. This allows for each child to pick out the coat that fits his or her taste, perhaps a perfectly pink coat for the four-year-old girl or a superhero coat for the seven-year-old boy.
The doors at each Distribution Day site remain open until every family is served. At the close of Distribution Day, any remaining coats are distributed to other local agencies to be given to children in need throughout the winter. JLA volunteers and 2,000 community volunteers participate in the acquisition, sorting and distribution of coats. It is because of the valued support of local groups, businesses, schools and individuals that Coats for Kids can continue to help keep so many Central Texas kids warm this winter.
