RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) _ A Riverside police officer has killed a man during a shootout.
Police say the officer had stepped out of his patrol car at about 11:30 p.m. Friday to check on a car parked near a closed gas station when a man outside of the car pulled a handgun.
Lt. Larry Gonzalez tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1ebXxZe ) that the gunman fired at least three shots _ two hit the door of the patrol car and one hit a nearby truck.
The gunman was shot and died at the scene. His name wasn't immediately released.
The officer, a four-year veteran, wasn't hurt.
A man and a woman inside the car were questioned and released.
