FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — California's longest-serving Death Row inmate is facing a third retrial of his death sentence.

The Fresno Bee reports that 55-year-old Douglas Ray Stankewitz has beenbrought to Fresno County Jail. He was scheduled for a hearing at the downtown courthouse on Friday.

Stankewitz was convicted in the 1978 murder of 22-year-old Theresa Graybeal in Fresno.  Authorities say he and four other people forced Graybeal into her car and went to Fresno looking for heroin.

They say Stankewitz later shot Graybeal and bragged to his friends, "Did I drop her or did I drop her?"

The California Supreme Court threw out his first death sentence in 1982. A federal appeals court overturned his second death sentence last year.

The court said his attorney failed to tell jurors about Stankewitz's abusive childhood and mental health problems.
