LA VERNE, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews are close to surrounding a 40-acre brushfire that's damaged an outbuilding in eastern Los Angeles County.

The blaze erupted shortly before 1 p.m. Friday near La Verne and swiftly grew in the brushy foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

It's now some 80 percent contained.

Several homes are nearby. The Sheriff's Department says deputies went door to door evacuating people and horses. A children's center in the area also was evacuated but no injuries are reported.

More than 100 firefighters, two Super Scooper airplanes and three helicopters are fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
