WHITTIER (CNS) - A man who was possibly armed and holding hostages barricaded himself inside an apartment in Whittier today, prompting a SWAT team response.

“The man inside the apartment complex may be armed with a gun or a knife. We don't know yet. And he may be holding his own children as hostages,” Whittier police Lt. Mike Przybyl said early tonight.

Police were called to the 7900 block of Bright Avenue about 4 p.m., Przybyl said, and a sheriff's special weapons team was sent to the scene to try to negotiate the unidentified man's surrender.

According to reports from the scene, the man and a female could be heard screaming, and he allegedly threatened to kill people inside the apartment and blow it up. Windows were broken out of the unit.

People living in the building and adjacent structures were being evacuated.
